Adding better drop-in hardware and elecs is pretty much all it takes to bring a cheap bass up to par, as long as it cane be set up well. The setup is what makes a great bass .

Which cheapo basses should I review?
I love acoustic bass, but mostly for playing to myself. I’ve had several. Mostly ones with a pickup that you can plug in, as an option. Have done some recoding with them as well. A used .A cheapy Yamaha or Fender will work just fine and MUCH better than an acoustic bass. And nearly any amp will be louder than an acoustic bass.Though electric bass guitars are more expensive than acoustic ones, they are both usually priced higher than their (non–bass) counterparts. Once again, I'm revisiting the idea of modding my old J&D P-J (maple neck, alder body, rosewood fretboard, P-bass neck and body style) into a super-jazz.
